Voice SMS (not MMS) - the application people really want

In the second session at Connect 2006, Ewald Andert from Kirusa described Voice SMS and some of it's uptake in Asia. I first saw one of the early Voice SMS services (not from Kirusa) in Singapore in December 2005, but now there are multiple vendors and the application is being rolled out in numerous Asian countries.

Isn't Voice SMS just voicemail, repackaged? No! With voice mail you place a call and, if it fails to get through, you get dumped to voice mail. Voice SMS intentional messaging.

Like SMS, you decide you want to send a message — perhaps one message to multiple people. Unlike SMS, the user interface is easy — you speak. You don't have to peck at keys. And on the receiving side, you decide when to listen — perhaps you're in a place where you can listen to a message but can't carry on a conversation right now.

Sending voice instead of text solves problems in parts of Asia where local languages aren't handled by the SMS interface. It's even more important for people who can't read and write. Finally, there's a lot more information and emotional content in a voice message than any text message.

One of Kirusa's first Voice SMS was GrameenPhone in Bangladesh. This short advertisement by GrameenPhone shows the emotional value of Voice SMS.

All 3 celcos in Malaysia have now launched their own versions of voice SMS. DiGi led the salvo by launching Malaysia's 1st Voice SMS branded as BubbleTalk in Feb 2005. Then Celcom launched FunTalk in October 2005 and lastly maxis in December 2005 with the brand name VoiceSMS (they're really creative with naming convention). You can clearly see who is the market leader in terms of services and innovation. No wonder DiGi is picking up business from maxis.

I will now give you a dissected info on all three service.

DiGi BubbleTalk - to 016 only
Dial *016XXXXXXX and press send. Message length 30 seconds. Charge RM0.10 to send. Recipient will receive a SMS to inform of new Bubble message. Retrieve by dialing *0*First retrieval of message is FREE. Other retrievals are charged RM0.10 per retrieval. Prompt to reply to receiver. To reply to a Bubble message, simply press any key or restart the sending process.

Celcom FunTalk - to 019 & 013
Dial *019/013XXXXXXX and press send. Message length is 30 seconds. Charge is RM0.10 to send.Recipient will receive a SMS to inform of new FunTalk message with the option tosave message to be retrieved later. Retrieve by dialing *00*which is FREE. Other retrievals arecharged at RM0.30 per 60 seconds of call (money making scheme here by delaying retrieval) by dialing *02*. No prompt for reply. Receiver does not receive ay prompt to reply. Receiver has to restart the process altogether to reply. Extra service of masking sender number called SecretTalk. Dial *0*019/013XXXXXXX and press send. Charged at premium of RM0.50.

maxis VoiceSMS - to 012 & 017
Dial **012/017XXXXXXX. Intra network (012-012 or 017-017) is charged RM0.10. Inter (012-017 & vicer-versa) is charged RM0.20.Message length is 30 seconds. Phone of recipient will ring (out-bound call) with phone number of sender. Cannot differentiate between voice call or Voice SMS. If call is not picked up, SMS will be sent to inform of retrieval. Retrieve by picking up call or dial *1*. Retrieval is FREE. Other retrievals are FREE during promotion period. To reply to intra messages, press any key. Not available for inter (can't even synergise own network).

From the above, you can clearly guess which service is simpler and easier to use. It's also cheaper than conventional voice mail service. This will save you cost in terms of making a call. You don't have to wait for a machine to speak before leaving a message :). If you want a more personal touch and is too lazy to type a long SMS or MMS, BubbleTalk's the service for you It can even serve as a reminder service for yourself and your friends & family.

first of all, i'd like to say i'm not "blogging", i'm just "writing", because i hate blogs, because blogs are so common, blah blah...

stupid thing to say, right? i'll just give it a try, sort of like a one-year trial.

anyway, i enjoy reading old newspapers, picked randomly from this gargantuan bundle of newspapers at this side of my house.

so one day, when nature called, i knew i had to go to the toilet for a long time, so i picked a newspaper to be my companion.

then, in the middle of the process (in the toilet already), i stumbled upon this:

the point was to point at the fact that some things can't be expressed using words. some things must use sound effects.

maybe it doesnt tickle you much, but what tickles me the most is.. look at the words i've emphasized at the picture.

tues met up w e 2 freaks again (hahah), together w jenny, rick n his fren... since we gt tics from M1 to watch e movie Herbie Fully Loaded.. apparently amanda n jenny tricked moi n said they forgot to bring their tics so they couldnt come join us, esp since they lazy to go back home from nus to take... bud actuali they did come bud i oni knew after e movie... grr... yy pa kat w them n din join moi n rick n his fren for dinner... yy joined jenny n amanda for dinner instead... f***ed up... hahah... yy was late in meetin moi for movie too... grr... then in e cinema jenny bubbletalk moi ask moi to turn to e right... bud i din c e sms to listen to e msg until e movie ended liaoz... hahah... oh ya, yy n moi coincidentally wore e same colour polo tee... rick n jenny saw le immediately sae couple wear... i oso din realise till they tell moi... hahah... we left for home straight after e movie lorz... anw e movie yep nt bad, quite farnie... shud go n watch...

M1 gave moi a gd pressie again... dis mth bill they offset my basic sub, 3G Plan, callerid n bye bye ring ring... i ended up oni payin for e extras i use which amounts to oni abt $15... n their new bubbletalk (voice sms) works reali cool n gd thing is it's free nw till 31st aug... even after tt oni $0.10 nia... woohoo~~~ they r nw giving away Proj Superstar tics.. hope can get=)

CO today with laozhou... Haha khoo thinks he grew fatter... I dunno la, I don't observe him THAT closely. Yanshan is how sad that he said she grew fatter. You people ah! Everytime say "Ah! I want to grow fatter! Yay I win you by 2kg!" then pple say u fatter then sad. And anyway, shan, you need to gain weight!

The CO room was really crowded... especially the pipa side because they had like so many! Then xianyue so sad only have 5! A bit hard to split evenly among gao zhong er.

Laozhou was as luo suo as ever... Haha I think he was trying to impress the J1s or something? The whole daji section was doing homework and I started on the sudoku puzzle in TIME.

Oh during qin bin ma yong when we played through the first time, then after the 6 5 3 2 6, I felt that zhonghu was damn powerful! Ok not praising qing and I or anything, but it's like, just got that feeling la... or maybe people not very familiar with song so never play as loud as before or maybe just we too long never play zhonghu then deluding ourselves or something.

Yanqing's zhonghu ROCKS! Ah... it's not zao one la! Then damn nice to play!! Very nice to fa hui... I'm so jealous!

Ah PE tml... And there's physics... Haven't done the tutorial yet.

If all goes well I'm going to go to this M1 Bubbletalk discussion thingy on Monday and make $70.

Yay... my father just returned from China yesterday! And I received a letter from shun! Haha this time only lag 1.5 months. I shall write back very soon!

Have been hunting around the VoiceSMS service demand in Indonesia. Ultimately found one, according to the local press - JAKARTA POST, VoiceSMS

Indosat operator has first launched its VoiceSMS on the 4th Q of 2005 last year.

Indosat broadcasted SMS to notify the soft launch of its "i-Say" - VoiceSMS

On 29th December 2005, Indosat has broadcasted the SMS notification to its existing subscriber for the soft launched of VoiceSMS service.

The survey results showed that not all its existing subscriber received the broadcasted SMS message that notified the soft launch of its new VoiceSMS in town.

In some cases, some subscribers tried to introduced the i-Say to his/her friends (world of mouth). There is no source that indicated the number of SMS advert broadcasted to its existing subsribers for the soft launched of Indosat new VoiceSMS service called "i-Say".

Personal opinion and experience, perhaps indosat has broadcasted the SMS advert to more than 500K subsribers for the soft launch of i-Say.

The few weeks after launched, feedback from some subscribers commented that the soft launched service has running out of capacity due to the high demands on using the service. Some even made a ring to Indosat customer service department to obtain the latest update on the VoiceSMS service.

Can't find lots comment on the recently launched VoiceSMS by Maxis on the web but least not at last, found the following:

"So N send this VoiceSMS thingy to me. The sms was "You've received voicesms blablabla... press *1* to retrieve it" something like that.

And what frustrated me is I can't even connect (do I use the correct term?) and hear the voice of my darling... Instead this annoying lady voice said "sorry, the number you've dialled is not in service.." WTF??

So I try to send voicesms to her instead. To do it you dial **012XXXXXXX and follow the instruction. SHE GOT IT! But why I cant?? Damn IT!

Maybe for the first time I hate MAXIS!!"

Maxis VoiceSMS is not the actual VoiceSMS. Maxis VoiceSMS is intrusive where the recipient recieve voice call rather than the SMS notification (non-instrusive). It is similar to someone is calling you but instead of talk to the sender realtime, you listen to the message. Many people do not want to be interrupted, and do not want to be forced to pick up the call. Operator has to understand this.

Most operator nowaday do not tend to understand subscriber needs. This is important !!

With the five million customers between Malaysia and Singapore in the span of eight months, Bubble Motion - the first company in the world to provide voice SMS technology - is ready to take on the rest of Asia.

BubbleTALK provides a navigation-free end user experience for ease of use. The brainchild of Venu Sriperuman after experiencing difficulty typing SMSs at night when mobile keypads didn't light up, BubbleTALK is touted as the next "killer application" to hit the mobile communications industry.

"Communicating with some of my relatives via SMS was difficult as a great many of them did not know how to text", said co-founder Sunil Coushik, who drives Bubble Motion's business growth. Cheap and easy to use
'Price' and 'ease of use' are the keywords in Coushik's strategy for BubbleTALK domination. "Someone can learn how to use our service in two minutes. "By focusing on useability instead of having a features or tech-driven perspective, we keep prices affordable so as to drive usage."

Coushik believes that Bubble Motion's market-oriented approach provides the edge for sustainable growth. "We are not a typical tech vendor, and talk differently to operators. We understand that subsriber churn in uppermost on their minds and come up with solutions that are business-oriented, not tech-oriented" said Coushik, who shares that Bubble Motion, will be built around voice-oriented applications.

Not a replacement for SMS

"We are not looking to replace SMS or cannibalise vice. The real idea is to understand how operators generate revenue, and introduce applications slowly and steadily. You get a lot of feedback from operators who understand the market best in terms of pricing and demand. We have a clear aim to increase ARPU for operators and that will happen with multiple services," he said.

Accordingly, Bubble Motion is putting a strong focus on R&D, making Singapore their new headquarters after launching their business in Malaysia. Celcom Malaysia Bhd has recently launched the FunTALK (kind of similar to BubbleTALK but not exactly). For sure, Celcom wanted to grab the part of the VoiceSMS market share, APRU in Malaysia that DiGi is the major player in VoiceSMS service.

Celcom main focus is on secret message that cost more than the normal voice SMS. One of the downsize of FunTALK is that the recipient needs to dial long digit to retrieve the voice message such as 1) Dial *00*019/013xxxxxxx or *00*0192201000. In addtion, Celcom FunTALK create complicated call flow for user to retrieve the fun message. Its a voice mailbox feature eventually.

If you are in Malaysia, do give a try for BubbleTALK and you'll feel the different as it compare with FunTALK. You got to tell everyone of which is the most simple and easy to use service.

SINGAPORE -- While enjoying himself at a party in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur recently, 29-year-old Andrew Lai decided to razz a friend who had opted to spend a quiet night at home. He recorded 30 seconds of club music, shouted, "You're missing this!" and then pressed the star key on his mobile phone, zipping the message to his pal.

Mr. Lai sent what some are billing as the next big thing in mobile communications in some parts of the world: the "voice-text" message. A Singapore technology company, Bubble Motion, has teamed up with Swedish telecommunications giant Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson to market a messaging service that eliminates the need to tap out a text message and replaces it with voice. It is a potentially hot product for wireless-service providers in developing countries and could make inroads in places
where people haven't quite gotten the hang of tapping out text messages with their thumbs on a cellphone keypad.

In Asia, text messaging -- also called short-message service, or SMS -- is huge. It is a service that allows people to type messages using the letters on the keypad of their mobile phone to send to another person at a fraction of the cost of a phone call. Still, many people find the process of typing on a small phone tedious. Others, like Mr. Lai, simply want to say more, without actually talking directly to, or waking, their friends.

"Sometimes you don't want to make a phone call -- you just want to send a statement," said Mr. Lai, who still sends about 20 SMS text messages a day in addition to voice SMSs. "This new service is great, because you can convey a lot more with your voice than you can in a plain text message."

Voice SMSs are priced slightly more than a text message, but are half the cost of a regular mobilephone call and a fifth of the cost of so-called multimedia messaging services, which can incorporate photos, music and other content into messages.
Users of the "voice SMS" service aren't trying to talk directly to the people they call. Instead they just want to send a message in the form of voice instead of text. The recipient's phone doesn't even ring for a voice SMS; the recipient is alerted with a beep and can retrieve the voice message by pressing the star key.

The technology was developed in Bangalore, India, by Sunil Coushik and his partner, who dubbed the new voice-text service "bubble talk." They describe the service as an ideal match for service providers looking for ways to use idle phone capacity.
"Operators have over-invested in terms of infrastructure; 40% of voice circuits are not being used by anybody," Mr. Coushik said. "So we said, 'Hey, you have excess capacity, you just need to give me those voice circuits. And you don't need to make any other capital investments.' "

Ericsson plans to market the service, already offered in Malaysia and Singapore, to phone companies world-wide, starting in Asia and Europe. The service is likely to appeal first in countries such as India and Pakistan, where text messaging languishes, said Eleana Liew, an analyst at research firm Gartner Group.
Customers in these countries don't send many text messages partly because they can't use their local language on the Romanized keypad of most cellphones. She thinks voice text, which works on any handset and can be used on any type of cellphone network, also will resonate with older or less-tech-savvy consumers who find it cumbersome to type messages on the keypad.

Mobile-phone companies in Asia for years have been searching for a new "killer application" that could match the success of text messaging. For Asian telecommunications companies, data account for 10% to 20% of mobile-phone revenue, and text messages account for the bulk of that business. Phone companies want to ramp that up: Average revenue per customer is falling across Asia, even in high-growth markets such as China and India, as competition increases and prices
for voice phone calls continue to fall.

Phone companies in developed markets are starting to roll out so-called third-generation services that allow customers to download video and music and connect to the Internet. But that is the high end of the market and is years off for developing countries, where consumers can't afford fancy new handsets built for multimedia messaging, nor pricey Internet phone connections.

Bubble Motion signed up Malaysian mobile-phone operator DiGi.com Bhd. in February and
added Singaporean operator MobileOne Ltd. in August. In Malaysia, DiGi reports that 36% of its 3.7 million customers have used the service. "The customer feedback is incredible. You can send a message in any language," says Chee Pok Jin, DiGi's chief marketing officer. DiGi charges 10 Malaysian cents (about three U.S. cents) for a voice SMS, half the cost of an average 30-second voice call.

The company registered about 80,000 "bubble talk" messages a day in the first week it launched the service; that surged to 250,000 a day in August, when the company began offering 10 free messages a day to customers as part of a two-month promotion. Gartner estimates the DiGi can conservatively expect about 50,000 paid messages a day once the free offer ends.

For example,

If every SMS is charged @ USD0.10 (different country may apply different rate) and SMS recieved is free. Therefore, Bubble message charging should look as the following:

1) * - sending a bubble message will be charged @ USD0.10
2) *0* - Free (no charge)
3) *1* - Free (no charge)
4) Reply - Replying to a retrieve bubble message will be charged @ USD0.10

NOTE:
It is acceptable that if operator is going to charge for *1* (retrieve of old bubble messages). The rate for *1* should charged @ USD0.05 lesser/lower than the sending rate. Meaning, user can retrieved 10 bubble messages using *1* with the cost of USD0.05.

From the user perspective, cost of spending/using and the simplicity of the service provided are the major concerns, operator has to comprehend this.

"The overworked thumbs of some text messaging enthusiats will enjoy some respite from today, when MobileOne (M1) launches a new voice messsaging service. Called BubbleTALK, the service allows M1 customers to send and receive 30-second messages. The service will be free until the end of this month, after which each message will cost the sender 10 cents.

All users have to do is press the "*" key, dial the desired phone number, then record the message. The recipient will then receive an SMS telling him that he has a voice message, which can be retrieved by dialing "*0*'.

According to M1 marketing manager Rama Lingam, the company hopes that BubbleTALK will carrythe same appeal as text messaging. "Sometimes, you don't want to intrude by calling someone, such as when you think the person might be busy, or when you just want to leave a short note," he said.

The company believes it will also come in useful in situations where typing is not convenient, for users who find SMS typing difficult, or when users want to leave a message in a language that does not use the Roman alphabet.

For now, only M1 mobile customers can use BubbleTALK. SingTel and StarHub said they have no plans to offer the service yet. A SingTel spokesman said most of their customers already have voice messaging options. Many phone these days allow the user to record a voice message and then send it as an MMS," she noted.

A SingTel MMS, however, usually costs between 20 and 80 cents each, depending on the file size. A StarHub spokesman said the company was looking into it, but nothing was confirmed yet. "
